Route 100 Safety Concerns Discussed at Recent Meeting

(Chester Springs, PA) – Amidst growing concern over the number of automobile accidents on Route 100 North between East Nantmeal and South Coventry Townships, Senator John Rafferty, Representative Curt Schroder, and Representative Tim Hennessey met with Richard Hogg, Deputy Secretary for Highway Administration for PennDOT, to discuss potential improvements that would make this portion of roadway safer for motorists.

The meeting, held at the Upper Uwchlan Township Building on November 16th, was also attended by officials from Upper Uwchlan, East Nantmeal, and South Coventry Townships. After a short discussion on the recent rise in accidents on this dangerous stretch of roadway, Secretary Richard Hogg outlined some short and long term roadway improvements which will be made to this section of Route 100.

In the short term, PennDOT plans to add more signs on the curved areas and to further limit passing zones in some areas.  In an effort to improve winter driving and reduce the probability of snow and ice accumulation, PennDOT also plans to trim back trees this December, which will allow more sunlight through to heat the road surface. Penn DOT also plans to improve water drainage and install painted rumble strips on the roadway at the curve approaches.  All of these improvements are scheduled to take place before winter officially begins in late December.

In the Spring of 2007, PennDOT plans to mill the curve areas and resurface the roadway with an open grade chip coating which will allow water to run through it, further improving roadway traction.

"I thank Secretary Hogg and PennDOT for their responsiveness to our request for immediate resolutions to the existing dangerous conditions along Route 100.  More improvements will be forthcoming over time to address traffic issues and safety concerns," Rafferty said.

Representative Curt Schroder expressed his commitment to the continuing efforts to improve safety on Route 100.  "By working together with the townships and PennDOT, improvements have been made and continue to be made.  Motorists must be reminded to use caution while traveling Route 100 in northern Chester County, particularly in wet weather," Schroder said.
