FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Senators Rafferty and Williams Announce Progress on Route 422 CorridorCOLLEGEVILLE - Senators Connie Williams (D-Montgomery/Delaware) and John Rafferty (R-Montgomery) are pleased to announce that progress is being made to the problematic US 422 corridor. In a letter recently received from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced the awarding of a contract to begin construction on the Interim Project, US 422 West Bound Lanes between the Route 23 and Route 363 interchanges. "Finally, the beginning of methods to relieve congestion in and around the Betzwood Bridge area. Negotiations continue to resolve the outstanding issues to allow work to go forward on other projects, including the new two lane Iron Bridge over the river," stated Rafferty. The construction of the Interim Project is aimed at diminishing congestion during peak evening traffic hours by adding an additional third lane, as well as making needed repairs to the existing Route 422 Bridge over the Schuylkill River. "This is great news for the people who regularly use the Betzwood Bridge," Williams said. "Not only will this help to relieve congestion, but it also will enhance safety. Moving forward, I expect the same level of commitment and cooperation from everyone who has been involved in getting this project off the drawing boards." This project is the initial phase of the River Crossing Complex Program, which consists of several projects designed to improve the travel conditions on Route 422 between U.S. Route 202 and Route 363. Construction for the Interim Project is scheduled to begin in early 2008 and conclude later this year. PennDOT crews will be working during off peak hours to prevent additional strain to rush hour traffic.
