Senate Committee to Hold Summer Hearings On Wide Range of
Transportation Issues
(HARRISBURG) -- The Senate Transportation Committee will continue its
aggressive schedule of public hearings on transportation funding issues this
summer, according to Chairman John Rafferty (R-44), who said the panel is
seeking input on a wide range of issues affecting the state’s roads, bridges,
rail lines, ports and aviation. The hearings will all be held in Hearing Room 1
of the North Office Building in Harrisburg.
“We’ve conducted three hearings already and have heard from a number of
groups and individual’s ideas to better meet our transportation needs,” Rafferty
said. “This is a vitally important issue to public safety and our economy, and
we want to keep it in the public spotlight, and look for new and innovative ways
to fund and improve our transportation systems.”
Rafferty said Governor Ed Rendell is scheduled to join various associations
in testifying at the next hearing, which will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday,
July 21. Other hearings will include such topics as the Turnpike’s financial
outlook (impact of Act 44, reconstruction and widening), public transit funding,
tolling options, freight rail line funding needs, Pennsylvania ports and
aviation needs.
“The testimony we receive will be important to crafting new policy and
legislation intended to improve our transportation networks – which are vital to
our state’s economy,” Rafferty said. “These hearings will provide us with a
chance to hear from individuals and organizations that have expertise in all
transportation areas and to find creative ways to do more with transportation in
these tough economic times.”
